ISO to release health and safety standard ISO 45001
This year the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will be releasing a standard for workplace health and safety – ISO 45001.
It will be inspired by OHSAS 18001 and will set the requirements for occupational health and safety management systems.
The aim of ISO 45001 is to provide a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions.
Reports from the committee developing the standard have indicated that there will be a strong focus on the ‘context’ of an organisation. This means that as part of this standard a business has to look further than just the WHS concerns of their organisation and determine what society expects from them. In addition, management and leadership will be a strong focus, with safety not just able to be delegated.
ISO 45001 will be designed to easily integrate with ISO 14001 health and safety aspects to be part of an overall management system. It will be able to be implemented by any organisation, no matter the size or type of work undertaken.
